Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do you accept scripts by email?
A: Normally, no. For 2012, though, please follow the e-mail instructions on the application page.
Q: Can I submit more than one script?
A: Yep. And for the first time ever, you will receive a discount if you enter more than one..
Q: What kinds of scripts win?
A: Well-written ones. Genre does not really matter to us. Good story telling does. The first two years, the winning scripts were a thriller and horror. Last year, it was an epic drama. If you entertain the readers, chances are good you'll win or come close to it.
Q: Who is reading my script?
A: The same type of people who would be reading it if were green-lit. We have pooled together produced screenwriters, directors, actors and representatives to decide whether your script should move forward.
Q: Who considers the winning scripts?
A: Many of our contacts are relationships we've formed over the past 3 years, so it's a pretty close-knit group of managers, producers, and directors. We continue to expand our base of industry execs, either through referrals from our trusted outlets or researching and qualifying new companies and individuals.
Q: How does my script move forward?
A: We work on a scoring system. Readers judge your screenplay based on story, structure, dialogue, and characters.>
Q: Crap, I just found a bunch of typos. Can I re-submit?
A: No. You should've checked that earlier. The draft you enter is the draft that will be judged.
Q: What if my script is optioned or sold after I have submitted it.
A: Congrats. Unlike other contests, we will still consider your script for the grand prize.
Q: When will I know if I won?
A: We'll notify you by email. Quarter-finalists will be announced by June 30, 2012, Semi-finalists by July 30th, and finalists by August 15. Winners will be announced during our ceremony at the Mayne Stage September 9, 2012.
Q: Is there any benefit to entering my script early?
A: Yep. It's cheaper.
Q: Can I enter a script I entered last year?
A: Sure. Hopefully, you have rewritten it some more and made it stronger.
Q: I don't live in the Midwest can I still enter?
A: You must have a permanent address in the Midwest. If there are one or more writers on the script, then at least one must live in the Midwest.
Q: Is there a Student discount?
A: Yes. Please check the website for the student entry fee.
Q: If I win, can I trade in my prize for its cash equivalent?
A: No.
Q: If I win, you cover airfare, car rental and hotel. What about food?
A: Food and drink wise you are on your own, champ!
Q: Can I get feedback on my script?
A: Not this year, but we are considering it for the near future.
Q: What type of files do you accept?
A: PDF.
Q: My script is 122 pages. Can I still enter?
A: You can, but it will not be read. Industry standards are 90 - 120. And honestly 120 pages is a bit long. Here is an idea of where your script should be:
Action, Animation Comedy, Family, Horror: 95 - 100 pages
Drama: 109 - 120 pages
We won't ding you if your script does not fall into these lengths, but we will if it's over 120. Believe us when we say we are doing you a favor by trying to keep the page number down.
Q: My English is not that great. Can I still enter?
A: Yes and consider a translator.
