20th Anniversary Celebration Featuring Co-Founder Ed Bernero (“Criminal Minds”)

Edward A. BerneroChicago Screenwriters Network will forego its standard monthly meeting in September; instead, we’re throwing a party to celebrate CSN’s 20th anniversary! Help us put the fun in “fundraiser” on Sunday, September 13, 2015, at the Irish Bistro as we celebrate two decades of “Helping Writers Make Scenes” along with our guest of honor, CSN’s co-founder (and our most distinguished alumnus) Edward A. Bernero, creator of the NBC series Third Watch, executive producer of the CBS series Criminal Minds, and currently creator and executive producer of Crossing Lines. Admission is $20.00 per person in advance ($25.00 ea. at the door). Continue for more details and to register.

In the mid-nineties, Ed Bernero was a Chicago police officer who aspired to become a screenwriter. In searching for guidance on the craft he came upon an AOL chat room dedicated to screenwriting where he connected with other Chicago-area writers — among them fellow CSN co-founders Christiana Miller and Kenneth Mader — who shared his interests. They soon began to meet offline, in-person, and Chicago Screenwriters Network was formed. Meeting attendance quickly skyrocketed, and by June 1996 the group was incorporated with Ed as CSN’s first president.

By 1997, Ed had secured a freelance writer assignment for the CBS police drama Brooklyn South and relocated to Los Angeles. He went on to create the series Third Watch for NBC (1999-2005) on which he also served as show runner and was the show’s most prolific writer, contributing to 37 episodes. Ed went on to become Executive Producer of CBS’s series Criminal Minds in 2005.

At present, Ed is creator and Executive Producer of the TV series Crossing Lines, which premiered on NBC in 2013. The show is set in the International Criminal Court and features an international cast; it has been filmed in Paris, Nice, and Prague. The first two seasons are available on Netflix, and Canada’s CBC network has renewed it for a third season.

Admission for all attendees is $20.00 in advance or $25.00 at the door. Advance reservations will be sold until 2:00pm the day of the event; after that deadline, tickets may be purchased at the door if the event has not sold out.

Eventbrite - CSN's 20th Anniversary Celebration, featuring co-founder Edward Bernero ("Criminal Minds"/CBS)

As a membership perquisite, CSN’s annual members are invited to arrive at 5:00pm for a one-hour private reception with Ed; doors open for non-members / general public at 6:00pm. (A one-year CSN membership can be purchased on our website for only $40.00 through December 31, 2015; membership prices will increase on January 1, 2016.)

During the festivities Ed will sit for an interview to discuss the early days of CSN, his subsequent work in the television & film industry, and take questions from attendees.

CSN is organizing a silent auction with some terrific prizes for the winning bidders (winning bids may pay in cash, check, or credit/debit at the end of the evening). We will also conduct a 50/50 raffle during the event, so bring some cash for a chance to win half the take! (We also have a few surprises in store for attendees, but you won’t find out about those unless you attend the event.)

If you cannot attend — or if you’re feeling charitable over & above purchasing a reservation for the party — please consider making a tax-deductible donation (via Eventbrite) to Chicago Screenwriters Network, thereby funding the organization’s mission of educating area writers in the craft & business of screenwriting. CSN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization recognized as a public charity by the IRS; all donations to CSN are tax-deductible and donors will receive a record of giving (i.e., “receipt”) for tax purposes.

We look forward to seeing you at this historic event and celebrating 20 years of Chicago Screenwriters Network (and marking the start of our next 20 years)!
