“Heads Up!” Avoiding and Solving Common Screenplay Problems

On May 10th, the Chicago Screenwriters Network Speaker Series presents Mary Ruth Clarke, who co-wrote and starred in the original Meet the Parents and co-adapted it into the blockbuster version that starred Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. She has script doctored many screenplays, including A Guy Thing and The Godfather of Green Bay. She’s a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists, where she teaches screenwriting, and beginning this June she will be teaching at Second City’s Film, TV and Digital division.

Mary Ruth ClarkeScreenplays are unique, but in the 20+ years Mary Ruth has critiqued screenplays, she’s detected some universal mistakes which screenwriters often make — in concept, story, the challenge of writing for a visual medium, and formatting. Mary Ruth will give you great questions to ask yourself so you avoid mistakes in the first place, as well as offer you suggestions for solving existing problems in your screenplays. In addition, she will address the struggles and mistakes writers make in their approach to the craft and explore some best practices.

CSN’s monthly meetings are held at Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro, 3905 N. Lincoln Ave. (2nd fl.), Chicago. Screenwriters of all levels — as well as members of the creative, film, and television communities — are invited to attend. Mrs. Murphy & Sons has a parking lot for guests two doors south of the restaurant at the SE corner of Lincoln & Byron; add’l. street parking on Lincoln Ave. is free on Sundays and side streets in the area do not require permits for parking.

The doors open at 6:00pm for drinks, dining, and networking; the presentation commences at 7:00pm, followed by Q&A with audience members. Our door prize raffle at the end of the meeting will include a copy of John Jarrell’s recently-published Tough Love Screenwriting.

Admission for non-members of CSN is $5.00 with advance registration at Eventbrite — available online until two (2) hours before the meeting begins — or $10.00 at door.

Admission is free of charge for CSN annual members, though we ask members to visit Eventbrite and select the Reservation for CSN Annual Member/$0.00 option so that we have an accurate headcount for room set-up, staffing, etc. For more information on becoming a CSN annual member, click here and scroll to the bottom of the page.
